What is Mounjaro?

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a prescription-only weight loss injection containing tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Unlike GLP-1-only treatments, Mounjaro works on two hormone pathways simultaneously, making it the most clinically effective licensed weight loss injection currently available in the UK. It is administered once weekly via a pre-filled pen and is licensed by the MHRA for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 25 or above with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes.

How does Mounjaro work?

Tirzepatide mimics two naturally occurring hormones, GIP and GLP-1, that are released after eating. Together they signal to the brain that you are full, reduce appetite and food cravings, and slow the rate at which food leaves the stomach. Because Mounjaro activates both pathways rather than one, it produces a stronger effect on appetite regulation than GLP-1-only treatments, which is reflected in the clinical trial results.

What are the ingredients in Mounjaro?

Active ingredient: tirzepatide (2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, or 15mg depending on dose). Other ingredients: trisodium citrate
dihydrate, citric acid monohydrate, mannitol, polysorbate 80, and water for
injections.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you start your weight loss journey.

How is the Mounjaro pen used?

Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled injection pen and is injected once a week under the skin, in your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The pen is designed for straightforward self-injection and comes with clear instructions.

How should Mounjaro be stored?

Mounjaro should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. It should not be frozen. Once in use, the pen can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 21 days. Keep it away from direct sunlight
and out of reach of children.

What are the most common side effects of Mounjaro?

The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, and constipation.
These are most likely to occur when starting treatment or when the dose is increased, and typically ease over time. Your clinician will advise you on managing any side effects and can adjust your plan if needed.

Does Mounjaro burn fat?

Mounjaro does not directly burn fat, but it creates the conditions for fat loss by significantly reducing appetite and calorie intake. When combined with a reduced-calorie diet, the resulting calorie deficit leads to fat loss over time.

How does weight loss progress week by week on Mounjaro?

Most people notice a reduction in appetite and food noise within the first one to two weeks. Visible weight loss typically begins within the first month and becomes more significant as the dose is increased every
four weeks. The greatest results are usually seen between months three and six.

What level of support is offered while I am taking Mounjaro?

The SwiftDoctor clinical team is available throughout your treatment to answer questions, monitor your progress, and make any adjustments to your prescription. All support is provided online, with no need for
in-person appointments.

Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS through certain GP practices and specialist weight management services, though access remains limited and criteria are strict. SwiftDoctor offers private consultations for
eligible patients who want to begin treatment sooner.

Can I switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

Switching between treatments is possible and can be discussed during your consultation. Your clinician will assess whether a switch is appropriate based on your current progress and health profile.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Mounjaro, take it as soon as possible within four days of the missed dose. If more than four days have passed, skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled injection. Do not take two doses within the same week.
