What is Wegovy?

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss injection containing semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works by mimicking a hormone your body naturally produces after eating, helping to regulate appetite and reduce food cravings. It is administered once weekly via a pre-filled pen and is licensed in the UK by the MHRA for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 25 or above with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes.

How does Wegovy work?

Semaglutide works on receptors in the brain that control hunger and fullness. It reduces appetite and the urge to eat, slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach, and helps you feel fuller for longer after meals. Over time, this creates the calorie deficit needed for sustained weight loss.

What are the ingredients in Wegovy?

Active ingredient: semaglutide (0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, or 2.4mg depending on dose). Other ingredients: disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, and water for injections.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you start your weight loss journey.

How is Wegovy administered?

Wegovy is injected once a week under the skin, in your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The pre-filled pen is designed for self-injection and comes with clear instructions. Your clinician will walk you through the process at your consultation.

How should Wegovy be stored?

Wegovy should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. It should not be frozen. Once in use, the pen can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days. Keep it out of direct sunlight.

What are the most common side effects of Wegovy?

The most reported side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. These are most common when starting treatment or increasing the dose, and tend to ease over time. Your clinician will advise you on managing side effects and can adjust your treatment plan if needed.

Will I need to stay on Wegovy long term?

Wegovy is generally prescribed as a long-term treatment. Clinical data shows that weight is often regained when the medication is stopped, so your clinician will work with you to develop a plan that supports your goals over time.

What level of support is offered while I am taking Wegovy?

The SwiftDoctor clinical team is available throughout your treatment to answer questions, monitor your progress, and make any adjustments to your prescription. All support is provided online, with no need for in-person appointments.

Is Wegovy available on the NHS?

Wegovy is available on the NHS through specialist weight management services, though access is currently limited and waiting times can be lengthy. SwiftDoctor offers private consultations for eligible patients who want to begin treatment sooner.

Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?

Switching between GLP-1 treatments is possible and can be discussed during your consultation. Your clinician will assess whether a switch is appropriate based on your current progress and health profile.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Wegovy, take it as soon as possible within five days of the missed dose. If more than five days have passed, skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled injection. Do not take two doses within the same week.
