MHRA-licensed medicationWhat is GLP-1 medication?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your body naturally produces after eating that signals fullness to the brain. GLP-1 medications are prescription-only injections that mimic this hormone, helping to reduce appetite and support weight loss. They were originally developed for type 2 diabetes and are now also licensed in the UK for weight management in eligible adults.
SwiftDoctor offers two MHRA-licensed GLP-1 weight loss injections: Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide), which also acts on a second hormone pathway (GIP) alongside GLP-1. Both are self-administered once a week via a pre-filled pen and are prescribed following an online clinical assessment.
GLP-1 medication is generally suitable for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 25 or above with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. Eligibility is confirmed by a clinician during your consultation, not before.
Which GLP-1 medication is best for weight loss?
Both are once-weekly injections shown to produce substantial weight loss in clinical trials, but they are not interchangeable, and the "best" option depends on your individual health profile, medical history, and how your body responds, not on trial averages alone. Mounjaro's dual mechanism has shown greater average weight loss in trials, but Wegovy remains a highly effective, well-established option and may be preferred for some patients based on clinical suitability, tolerability, or cost.
There's no single "best" GLP-1: the right one is the one your clinician confirms is appropriate for you after reviewing your health.

Is GLP-1 medication right for me?
GLP-1 medication is not suitable for everyone, and any prescription must be based on a thorough clinical assessment of your health, medical history, and weight loss goals. During your consultation, a SwiftDoctor clinician will review your eligibility based on your BMI, any weight-related health conditions, and your current medications, and will confirm which GLP-1 option, if any, is clinically appropriate. We will never prescribe GLP-1 medication without first confirming it is right for you.

Frequently asked questions
GLP-1 medications work on receptors in the brain that regulate hunger and fullness. They reduce appetite and food cravings, slow the rate food leaves the stomach, and help you feel fuller for longer after meals, creating the calorie deficit needed for sustained weight loss. Mounjaro additionally activates GIP receptors, which is believed to contribute to its stronger average results in trials.
Most people notice a reduction in appetite within the first few weeks, with more significant weight loss typically following over the first three to six months as the dose is gradually increased.
GLP-1 injections, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, are administered once weekly via a pre-filled pen. Oral GLP-1 tablets are also becoming available and offer a needle-free alternative, though injectable forms remain the most established and widely prescribed option in the UK.
Retatrutide is a new GLP-1 medication being studied as a treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes. It works by targeting three hormone receptors involved in regulating appetite, blood sugar and energy balance: GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and glucagon. By activating all three receptors, Retatrutide aims to help reduce appetite, improve blood sugar control and increase energy expenditure.
Retatrutide is still undergoing clinical trials and has not yet been approved for routine use in the UK. Its safety and effectiveness continue to be evaluated before it can be reviewed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
In clinical trials, average weight loss ranged from around 15% of body weight over 68 weeks on Wegovy to around 22.5% over 72 weeks on Mounjaro, when combined with lifestyle changes. Individual results vary based on starting weight, dose, diet, and activity levels.
The most commonly reported side effects across GLP-1 medications are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. These are most likely when starting treatment or increasing the dose, and typically ease over time.
Switching between GLP-1 treatments, such as from Wegovy to Mounjaro, is possible and can be discussed during your consultation. Your clinician will assess whether a switch is appropriate based on your current progress and health profile.
GLP-1 medication is generally prescribed as a long-term treatment. Clinical data shows weight is often regained when it is stopped, so your clinician will work with you on a plan that supports your goals over time, including maintenance options.
The SwiftDoctor clinical team is available throughout your treatment to answer questions, monitor your progress, and adjust your prescription if needed. All support is provided online, with no need for in-person appointments.
