Cetirizine is a medicine that contains an active ingredient referred to as antihistamine. It's used for relieving the unpleasant symptoms associated with allergies. This medication is recommended for use by anyone above the age of 2. Unlike the previous versions of antihistamines, it doesn't make one be drowsy after taking it, therefore, you can go on with your daily duties as usual.

What is Cetirizine?

Cetirizine is an antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever and other allergies, such as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, itchy and watery eyes, and itchy skin rashes such as hives (urticaria). It is taken once a day and is less likely to cause drowsiness than older antihistamines.

How does Cetirizine work?

When you come into contact with something you are allergic to, such as pollen, dust or pet hair, your body releases a chemical called histamine. Histamine causes the typical allergy symptoms. Cetirizine blocks histamine from acting on your cells, which reduces or prevents these symptoms.

How to use Cetirizine

Always take Cetirizine as directed and read the patient information leaflet before use.

Adults and children aged 12 and over: take one 10mg tablet once a day.
Swallow the tablet with a glass of water, with or without food.
Do not take more than one tablet in 24 hours.
For hay fever, it can help to start taking it before the pollen season begins.

Possible side effects

Most people take Cetirizine without problems. Common side effects include:

Feeling sleepy or tired
Headache
Dry mouth
Feeling dizzy or sick

Stop taking Cetirizine and get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Warnings and precautions

Tell your prescriber before taking Cetirizine if you:

Have kidney problems
Have epilepsy or have had seizures
Have difficulty passing urine
Are pregnant or breastfeeding

If Cetirizine makes you sleepy, do not drive or use machinery, and avoid alcohol.
