Metronidazole 400mg tablets are antibiotics. Bacterial vaginosis is known to cause a change in the natural balance of bacteria living in the vagina. Metronidazole kills some of the extra bacteria that occur in BV and returns the balance of bacteria to normal. Metronidazole tablets may still be used for treating recurring bacterial vaginosis since it's not uncommon for BV to recur within three months after treatment.

What is Metronidazole 400mg?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV), a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance of the bacteria that normally live in the vagina. BV can cause a thin grey or white discharge with a strong, fishy smell, which is often more noticeable after sex. Metronidazole is also used for some other bacterial and parasitic infections.

How does Metronidazole work?

Metronidazole works by damaging the DNA of the anaerobic bacteria that overgrow in BV, stopping them from multiplying. This allows the normal balance of vaginal bacteria to return and the symptoms to clear.

How to use Metronidazole 400mg Tablets

Always take Metronidazole exactly as your prescriber has instructed and read the patient information leaflet before use.

The usual course for BV is one 400mg tablet twice a day for 5 to 7 days.
Swallow the tablets whole with water, during or just after a meal.
Finish the full course, even if your symptoms clear sooner.
Do not drink alcohol during the course and for at least 48 hours after your last dose.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Metronidazole can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common side effects include:

Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick
A metallic taste in the mouth
Diarrhoea or stomach discomfort
Darker urine

Stop taking the tablets and seek urgent medical help if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.

Warnings and precautions

Tell your prescriber before taking Metronidazole if you:

Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding
Have liver disease or a blood disorder
Have epilepsy or a nervous system condition
Take warfarin, lithium or other regular medicines

Drinking alcohol while taking Metronidazole can cause flushing, a fast heartbeat, nausea and vomiting.

How quickly does Metronidazole work for BV?

Many people notice their symptoms improve within 2 to 3 days. It is important to finish the whole course so the infection clears fully.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Metronidazole?

No. Avoid alcohol during the course and for at least 48 hours afterwards, as it can cause an unpleasant reaction including sickness and flushing.

Does my partner need treatment?

BV is not considered a sexually transmitted infection, so male partners do not usually need treatment. Female partners may sometimes be affected and should speak to a healthcare professional if they have symptoms.

What if my BV keeps coming back?

BV can recur. If you have it more than twice in six months, speak to our clinical team or your GP, as you may need a different treatment plan or further tests.

What if I miss a dose?

Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed one.
