What is Quviviq?

Daridorexant is a treatment for adults with long-term (chronic) insomnia. In insomnia, the brain's "wake system" can stay too active at night. Daridorexant blocks orexin, a natural chemical that keeps you awake, helping you fall asleep and stay asleep. It works differently from older sleeping tablets, which sedate the brain.

Your clinician decides the right strength for you. Most people take 50mg; 25mg is used for people with moderate liver problems or who take certain other medicines.

How to use Quviviq

Take one tablet every night, within 30 minutes before you go to bed. You can take it with or without food, but it may take longer to work after a large meal. Keep following your sleep plan as well.

If you forget at bedtime, don't take it later in the night. Never take a double dose. You don't need to reduce the dose gradually if you stop, but please let us know.

We'll check in after 2 weeks, ask you a short questionnaire before your next supply, and review your treatment at 3 months.

Possible side effects

Common (up to 1 in 10 people): headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and feeling sleepy.

Uncommon (up to 1 in 100 people): sleep paralysis, hallucinations when falling asleep or waking, sleepwalking, vivid dreams or nightmares, and allergic reactions such as rash.

Tell us about any side effect. You can also report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Warnings and precautions

Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, and avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice in the evening.

Leave about 9 hours between taking your tablet and driving or using machinery. Don't drive unless you feel fully alert, especially in the first few days.

Some medicines interact, including certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV medicines, heart medicines, epilepsy medicines and St John's wort. Always tell us before starting anything new. Tell us straight away if you become pregnant.
