What is Circadin?

Melatonin is a hormone your body makes naturally to help regulate sleep. As we get older we make less of it. This prolonged-release tablet releases melatonin slowly through the night, and is licensed for short-term treatment of insomnia in adults aged 55 and over.

How to use Circadin

Take one tablet 1 to 2 hours before bed, after food. Swallow it whole; don't crush or chew it, as it is designed to release slowly through the night.

It can be used for up to 13 weeks. We'll check how you're getting on at about 3 weeks.

Possible side effects

Most people have no side effects. Possible effects include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, irritability, vivid dreams and stomach upset. See the patient information leaflet for the full list, and tell us about any side effect.

Warnings and precautions

Avoid alcohol, as it reduces how well melatonin works. It can cause drowsiness, so don't drive or use machinery if you feel sleepy.

Tell us if you take fluvoxamine, warfarin, HRT or the contraceptive pill, or other sleep medicines.
