What is Cialis?

About Cialis

Cialis is an oral medication containing the active ingredient tadalafil. It is primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps achieve and maintain an erection. Its effects can last up to 36 hours, providing a longer window of opportunity for sexual activity. This long-lasting effect is why it is often called the "weekend pill". In clinical studies, 81% of men said Cialis improved their erections, compared with 35% of men taking a placebo.

How Cialis Works

Cialis functions by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which increases blood flow following sexual stimulation. It does not increase sexual desire or treat the underlying physical causes of ED. At a lower daily dose, Cialis is also used to treat urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder, but the 10mg and 20mg tablets here are taken as needed for erectile dysfunction.

The medicine is a prescription-only treatment packaged in 10mg & 20mg tablets. They are the branded version of tadalafil made by pharmaceutical company Lilly. Tadalafil is a different medicine from sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, although both belong to the same group of PDE5 inhibitors.

How to use Cialis

Take Cialis following the guidance of your healthcare provider and always read the instructions carefully.

  • Take one tablet at least 30 minutes before sex.
  • Cialis usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to start working, although this varies from person to person.
  • Do not take more than one tablet in 24 hours. The 10mg and 20mg tablets are not recommended for continuous daily use.
  • You can take the medicine with or without food. However, it is advisable to limit alcohol intake for more effectiveness.

Cialis does not always work for everyone after the first use. It requires patience before giving up.

Possible side effects

The few people who suffer mild side effects from using Cialis find them to be temporary. The common side effects include:

  • Back pain or muscle aches
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Nasal congestion
  • Facial flushing

Don't take other ED medication with Cialis. Seek medical attention when you experience an erection for more than four hours after using Cialis. Stop taking Cialis and get medical help straight away if you have chest pain (do not use nitrates), sudden loss of vision or hearing, or an allergic reaction such as a rash or swelling of the face or throat.

Warnings and precautions

Do not take Cialis if you:

  • take nitrates (for example GTN spray or tablets) or poppers (amyl nitrite)
  • take riociguat (used to treat pulmonary hypertension)
  • have ever lost vision in one eye because of reduced blood flow to the optic nerve (NAION)
  • are allergic to tadalafil or any of the other ingredients

Cialis is not intended for use by women or by anyone under 18.

  • Heart problems, low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • A heart attack in the last 90 days or a stroke in the last six months.
  • Serious liver problems or severe kidney problems.
  • Sickle cell anaemia, multiple myeloma or leukaemia.
  • A deformed penis, such as a curved penis or Peyronie's disease.
What are the ingredients in Cialis?

Each Cialis tablet contains 10mg or 20mg of tadalafil. The other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, triacetin, titanium dioxide (E171), iron oxide yellow (E172) and talc. Cialis contains lactose, so speak to your doctor first if you have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars.

1. Which strength of Cialis is right for me?

Your clinician decides which strength suits you. The usual starting dose is 10mg and, if that is not effective enough, it can be increased to 20mg, which is the maximum dose and the most you can take in a day. 2. Can I take Cialis with other medicines?

Cialis can interact with some medicines, so tell your clinician about everything you take. Besides the nitrates, poppers and riociguat that must never be combined with it, take particular care with alpha-blockers (the combination with doxazosin is not recommended), HIV protease inhibitors, ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin and clarithromycin, which can raise Cialis levels, and rifampicin and some epilepsy medicines, which can lower them. Do not take Cialis with other treatments for erectile dysfunction.

3. Can I drink alcohol with Cialis?

Alcohol can make it harder to get an erection and can temporarily lower your blood pressure, so avoid heavy drinking (around 4 units or more for an average man), which can make you dizzy when you stand up.

4. Is daily Cialis different from the regular one?

Yes, Cialis Daily is a lower-dose option (2.5 mg or 5 mg) that is taken every day, allowing for spontaneous sexual activity without the need to plan ahead.
