What is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It helps men achieve and maintain an erection. Sildenafil tablets usually start to work within 30 to 60 minutes, and the effects can last for several hours.

How Does Sildenafil Work?

Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor that treats impotence and erectile dysfunction. It blocks the PDE5 enzyme. This allows the muscle in the blood vessels of the penis to relax and widen, which increases blood flow and helps you get and keep an erection. It is important to note that Sildenafil helps achieve and maintain an erection only when sexually aroused.

How to use Sildenafil

Take Sildenafil as advised by your clinician and follow the patient information leaflet:

  • You should take one tablet about one hour before sexual activity, swallowed whole with water.
  • Some men will achieve results within 20 minutes of using the pill, while others may take one hour. How quickly it works varies from person to person, and it can take longer after a large meal.
  • Do not take more than one tablet in 24 hours.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol, as it can make getting an erection harder.
Possible side effects

Common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Indigestion
  • Dizziness
  • Blocked or stuffy nose
  • Temporary changes in vision, such as blurred vision

If you feel dizzy or notice changes in your vision, do not drive or use machinery until the symptoms have passed.

Less common but serious side effects include:

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Sudden hearing loss
  • Chest pain
  • Prolonged erection (priapism) lasting longer than 4 hours

Stop taking Sildenafil and seek immediate medical help if these occur.

Warnings and precautions

Avoid using the pill if you suffer from any of the following conditions:

  • Heart disease or blood pressure.
  • Liver or kidney disease.
  • Retinitis pigmentosa.
  • You have had a heart attack or stroke within the last six months.
  • You are a haemophiliac.
  • Sickle cell anaemia or leukaemia.
  • You have a physical deformity of the penis.
  • Are taking a nitrate or riociguat drug.
What are the ingredients in Sildenafil?

Each Sildenafil tablet contains sildenafil (as sildenafil citrate) as the active ingredient. Sildenafil tablets are made in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg strengths, and SwiftDoctor offers 50mg and 100mg.

The inactive ingredients can vary between manufacturers, so check the patient information leaflet supplied with your tablets. They may include: Microcrystalline cellulose, calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, poly (vinyl alcohol), titanium dioxide (E171), macrogol 3350, and talc. Some Sildenafil tablets also contain lactose.

1. What is the difference between Sildenafil 50mg and 100mg?

Both strengths contain the same medicine, so the difference is the amount of sildenafil in each tablet. The usual starting dose is 50mg, and your clinician may then suggest a lower or higher dose depending on how well it works for you and how well you tolerate it. 100mg is the maximum dose, and higher doses are more likely to cause side effects. 2. Is generic Sildenafil as good as Viagra?

Generic Sildenafil contains the same active ingredient as Viagra and has to meet the same UK standards for quality, safety and effectiveness, so it works in the same way. If you have an intolerance to an ingredient such as lactose, check the patient information leaflet before taking your tablets.

3. Can I take Sildenafil with other medicines?

Some medicines other than the nitrates and riociguat mentioned above can also interact with Sildenafil. These include alpha-blockers (used for an enlarged prostate or high blood pressure), HIV medicines, some antifungal medicines, antibiotics such as erythromycin and clarithromycin, epilepsy medicines and St John's wort supplements.

Sildenafil should not be taken with other treatments for erectile dysfunction. Always tell your clinician about every medicine, herbal remedy and supplement you take, as you may need a lower starting dose or a different treatment.

4. What should I do if Sildenafil does not work for me?

Check that you are taking it as directed, about an hour before sex and with sexual stimulation. Stress, anxiety and other health conditions can also affect erections. Do not take extra tablets to try to improve the effect. If Sildenafil is not helping, speak to your clinician, who can review your dose, check for other possible causes or suggest a different treatment.

5. Do I need a prescription for Sildenafil?

In the UK, Sildenafil is mostly available with a prescription, although you can also buy it from a pharmacy after speaking with a pharmacist.
