What is Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a prescription medication used primarily to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Tadalafil improves blood flow to the penis when you are sexually aroused, helping men achieve and maintain erections during sexual activity. At a lower daily dose, tadalafil is also used to treat urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), but the 10mg and 20mg tablets here are taken as needed for erectile dysfunction.

How Does Tadalafil Work?

Tadalafil belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, which work by relaxing muscles in the penis and increasing blood flow. It contains the active ingredient tadalafil, which is absorbed into the bloodstream and helps the blood vessels in the penis to relax and widen when you are sexually aroused. This increased blood flow helps you get and keep an erection. Tadalafil does not work without sexual stimulation.

How to use Tadalafil

Take tadalafil exactly as prescribed by your clinician.

  • Tadalafil can be taken with or without food.
  • The recommended starting dose of tadalafil is 10mg, taken at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. The maximum dose of tadalafil for erectile dysfunction is 20mg.
  • If you miss a dose of tadalafil, take it as soon as possible unless it is almost time for your next dose, whereby you should skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose.
  • Tadalafil should not be used more than once per day. The 10mg and 20mg tablets are not recommended for continuous daily use.

If you suffer severe or persistent side effects, consult your healthcare provider. Stop taking Tadalafil and get medical help straight away if you have chest pain (do not use nitrates), an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or an allergic reaction such as a rash or swelling of the face or throat.

Warnings and precautions
  • Do not take Tadalafil if you take nitrates (for example GTN spray or tablets), poppers (amyl nitrite) or riociguat.
  • Do not use tadalafil if you are allergic to tadalafil or any of its ingredients.
  • Tadalafil is not intended for use by women or by anyone under 18.
  • Do not take Tadalafil if you have serious heart disease, have had a heart attack in the last 90 days or have had a stroke in the last 6 months. If you have any heart problem, tell your doctor first, as sexual activity puts extra strain on the heart.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, herbal remedies and supplements you take before taking Tadalafil.
  • Do not use Tadalafil if you have low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • Do not take Tadalafil if you have ever lost vision in one eye because of reduced blood flow to the optic nerve (NAION).
  • Speak to your doctor before taking Tadalafil if you have sickle cell anaemia, multiple myeloma, leukaemia, a deformed penis, or serious liver or severe kidney problems.
What are the ingredients in Tadalafil?

The active ingredient in Tadalafil is Tadalafil. Each tablet contains 10mg or 20mg of tadalafil, depending on the strength.

The inactive ingredients can vary between manufacturers, so check the patient information leaflet supplied with your tablets. They may include lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, sodium lauryl sulfate, hydroxypropylcellulose and magnesium stearate. Tadalafil tablets contain lactose, so speak to your doctor first if you have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars.

1. Do I need a prescription for Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is mostly available on prescription, although tadalafil 10mg is also sold in pharmacies as Cialis Together, without a prescription, after a consultation with a pharmacist. Tadalafil should not be taken with other treatments for erectile dysfunction. Always tell your clinician about every medicine, herbal remedy and supplement you take, as you may need a lower dose or a different treatment.

5. Can I drink alcohol with Tadalafil?

Alcohol can make it harder to get an erection and can temporarily lower your blood pressure, so avoid heavy drinking (around 4 units or more for an average man), which can make you dizzy when you stand up.

6. How quickly does Tadalafil work?

Tadalafil usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to start working, although this varies from person to person.
